Although an outright cure for nearsightedness has not been discovered, our eye doctors can now offer a number of treatments that may be able to slow the progression of myopia. These treatments can induce changes in the structure and focusing of the eye to reduce stress and fatigue associated with the development and progression of nearsightedness.

Why should you be interested in myopia control? Because slowing the progression of myopia may keep your child from developing high levels of nearsightedness that require thick, corrective eyeglasses and have been associated with serious eye problems later in life, such as early cataracts, glaucoma, macular degeneration or even a detached retina.

Several treatments have been shown to slow the progression of myopia, including low‑dose atropine drops, multifocal contact lenses, and multifocal glasses. Essilor Stellest is currently the first and only FDA‑authorized spectacle lens proven to slow nearsightedness in children, reducing progression by an average of 71% over two years.

Another effective option is specialty soft daily disposable contact lenses-MiSight by CooperVision-which are FDA‑approved to slow or even halt myopia progression. These lenses can only be fitted by optometrists who have completed specialized certification to manage each child’s unique needs.

While existing myopia cannot be reversed, today’s technology allows us to significantly reduce further progression and lower the risk of future eye disease. Ideal candidates are children as young as eight through their mid‑teens who show ongoing increases in their myopic prescription.
